Americas Zone Group II: Sunday

Victor Estrella

Mexico and Dominican Republic will meet in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Zone Group II third round in September with promotion to Group I at stake, after both teams recorded wins over the weekend.

Mexico had already sealed victory over Barbados before Sunday’s reverse singles rubbers, but the home team put the icing on the cake with a pair of wins for Daniel Garza and Cesar Ramirez to clinch a 5-0 triumph.

Dominican Republic had a tougher time in their away tie against Venezuela. The visitors led 2-1 heading into the final day, courtesy of wins from Victor Estrella in the singles and then, teaming up with his younger brother Henry, in the doubles, and it was the elder of the Estrella siblings who proved to be the hero again on Sunday.

Victor Estrella battled back from a set down to defeat Venezuelan No. 1 David Souto 36 64 61 62 to push Dom Rep into an unassailable 3-1 lead, and that was how the scoreline stayed when the fifth ‘dead’ rubber wasn’t played.

Dominican Republic will be out for revenge when they meet Mexico in the promotion play-off because the only previous meeting between the two nations, in 2004, ended as a 5-0 whitewash in favour of Mexico. However, this time Dom Rep will have home advantage.

At the other end of the spectrum, Bolivia were condemned to relegation to Group III after succumbing to Puerto Rico 3-1 on away soil. The visitors trailed 2-1 overnight and they offered little resistance on Sunday when the home team’s top player Alex Llompart defeated Hugo Dellien 63 75 46 60.

Joining Bolivia on the way down are Paraguay, who already had their fate sealed as their opponents El Salvador, benefitting from home court advantage, raced into an insurmountable 3-0 lead. However, Paraguay restored some pride on Sunday by winning both reverse singles rubbers.
