Philippines already have one foot in the second round of Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group I after they opened up a 2-0 lead against Pacific Oceania on Friday.

Playing at the University of St. Anthony in Camarines Sur, the Philippine team made light work of the singles rubbers on day one with a pair of straight-set wins. Jason Patrombon defeated Cyrile Jacob 63 62 76(4) before Treat Huey breezed past Michael Leong 60 63 62 to put the hosts firmly in control.

Philippines, bidding for an immediate return to Group I after being relegated last year, will meet either Lebanon or Pakistan if they prevail this weekend. The chance to seal the tie will first go to doubles duo Johnny Arcilla and Ruben Gonzales, who face Jacobe and Daniel Llarenas on Saturday.

The tie between Lebanon and Pakistan was a non-starter on Friday after heavy rain caused play to be abandoned for the day without a ball being struck. The tie is being held on outdoor clay at the ATCL Club in Jounieh, with the action now scheduled to get under way on Saturday at 11am local time.

In the bottom half of the draw, it was a tale of two halves in Hong Kong. The home team slipped behind when Nicholas Sayer lost to Indonesian No. 1 Christopher Rungkat 63 63 64, but Jonathan Chu responded with victory in similar fashion, beating David Agung Susanto 63 60 64, to leave the score locked at 1-1 overnight.

Thailand, meanwhile, opened up a 2-0 lead over Sri Lanka in Colombo. The player rankings showed the Thais to be firm favourites going into this clash and their class shone through in the opening singles rubbers. Kittiphong Wachiramanowong defeated Dineshkanthan Thangarajah 64 75 64 and then Danai Udomchoke hammered Vimuktha De Alwis 61 61 62.
