With one day of round robin action remaining at the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV event in Doha, the line-up for Saturday’s promotion play-off ties is starting to take shape.
Turkmenistan and United Arab Emirates have already advanced from Pool A, but they must wait to find out who their opposition will be from Pool B where Qatar and Singapore are competing to join Cambodia.
Turkmenistan and UAE, who are both unbeaten so far this week, meet each other on Friday. The tie will decide their final Pool A positions, which are important because the winner will meet the runner-up from Pool B, and vice versa.
On Thursday, UAE joined Turkmenistan at the top of the table with a 3-0 victory over Iraq, while Saudi Arabia also finished strongly by picking up their second win of the week, defeating Bahrain 3-0.
Cambodia look set to finish top of Pool B with three wins out of three so far, including victories against the two teams battling for second place, Qatar and Singapore.
Cambodia, making their first ever Davis Cup appearance, had a rest day on Thursday, but they’ll be back in action on Friday against Jordan, who are currently on one win after overcoming Myanmar earlier in the week.
Friday’s other tie in Pool B, between Qatar and Singapore, is a straight shoot-out to decide which nation progresses to the promotion play-offs with Cambodia. Both teams triumphed on Thursday, Qatar winning 2-1 against Jordan and Singapore hammering Myanmar 3-0.
