Chance for Argentina to reach top spot

David Nalbandian (ARG) 2008 Argentina - Russia

Argentina will jump to the top of the Davis Cup rankings for the first time if they can upset the odds and defeat Spain to win their maiden Davis Cup by BNP Paribas title next week. The Final is taking place at the Olympic Stadium in Seville on 2-4 December.

Victory for Argentina, currently ranked No. 3, would see them leapfrog Spain and last year’s Davis Cup champions, Serbia, who they defeated 3-2 in the World Group semifinals in September.

Argentina have been an ever present in the Top 10 since February 2002, just a few months after the Davis Cup rankings were launched, but they have never managed to reach the No. 1 spot.

Spain, on the other hand, are currently the top ranked nation in Davis Cup and have held this position since July 2009. They were also the No. 1 team between September 2004 and September 2005.

Spain are bidding to lift the Davis Cup trophy for a fifth time and, if successful, then both nations would maintain their current rankings of No. 1 and No. 3, with Serbia sandwiched between at No. 2.

The official team nominations are due on 22 November when the two captains, Spain’s Albert Costa and Argentina’s Tito Vazquez, will name the line-ups to compete in Seville.
