India take a 1-0 overnight advantage into day two of their clash with New Zealand, from which the loser will meet Chinese Taipei next month in a fight against relegation.
The score is only 1-0 because - following rain interruptions - bad light forced play to be suspended after three sets of the second rubber between Indian No. 2 Vishnu Vardhan and Kiwi No. 1 Jose Statham. Vardhan was leading the encounter 62 67(2) 64 when the action stopped.
Earlier in the day, Indian youngster Yuki Bhambri scored his first ever live Davis Cup victory by coming from two sets down to sensationally defeat the experienced Daniel King-Turner 36 06 62 64 62, dealing a crushing blow to the visitors in the bargain.
Vardhan and Statham are scheduled to resume their contest at 10am in Chandigarh, while the doubles rubber will take place after suitable rest for Vardhan, who is due to team up with Divij Sharan against New Zealand pair Artem Sitak and Michael Venus.
