Bulgaria v Finland

- Venue: Tennis Hall "Sofia''
- Location: Sofia, Bulgaria
- Surface: Indoor Hard

It's all square after the first day's play at the Tennis Hall in Sofia.

Bulgarian No. 1 Grigor Dimitrov showed why he has been tipped to be the next big thing in men's tennis for the last few years by putting in a commanding performance to defeat Juho Paukku 61 61 60 in the opening rubber. “I knew that my opponent had some problems with his movement on the court so I took control and just did my job,” the Bulgarian said.

But Micke Kontinen defied his world ranking of No. 949 and overcame Alexander Lazov 76(4) 63 64 in two hours 25 minutes to level play ahead of Saturday's doubles rubber.

Ireland v Estonia

- Venue: David Lloyd Riverview
- Location: Dublin, Ireland
- Surface: Indoor Hard

James McGee delighted the home crowd in Dublin with a commanding performance in the opening singles rubber. The Irishman made light work of Jaan Kononov dropping only four games in a one hour and 53 minute victory.

Tunisia v Latvia

- Venue: Cité Nationale Sportive
- Location: El Menzah, Tunisia
- Surface: Outdoor Hard

Latvia got off to the perfect start as Andis Juska beat Mohamed Haitham Abid 76(7) 63 60. Both players started well and you could sense that the first set would be key, and so it proved. After Juska won it in the tiebreak, he didn't look back, taking the next two sets easily.

Slim Hamza now has the unenviable task of trying to level the tie when he takes on Ernests Gulbis in the second match on day one.

Monaco v Belarus

- Location: Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Monaco
- Surface: Outdoor Clay

Moldova v Hungary

The hosts will take a 2-0 lead into Saturday's doubles rubber after Maxim Dubarenco defeated Marton Fucsovics 36 63 64 64 and Radu Albot overcame Viktor Filipenko 61 63 63 at the Manejul de Atletica Usoara.

Moldova lost their only previous tie against Hungary, which took place in 2009.

Bosnia-Herzegovina v Luxembourg

- Location: Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina
- Surface: Indoor Hard

Lithuania v Cyprus

- Venue: Siauliu Arena

Portugal v Benin

Portugal have taken a commanding 2-0 lead after the first day’s play in Lisbon with Joao and Pedro Sousa both recording wins over their African opponents. The first rubber was particularly one sided with Joao Sousa needing only 91 minutes to defeat Loic Didavi.

Alexis Klegou took a shock first set lead against world number 228 Pedro Sousa in the second rubber before the Portuguese regained his composure and took control of the match. All four players are nominated for Saturday's doubles rubber where the home side start strong favourites to seal the tie.
