Santiago Giraldo and Alejandro Falla scored singles wins to put Colombia within touching distance of the World Group playoffs after the opening day of their Americas Zone second round tie against Uruguay at the Complejo Tenistico Fabiola Zuluaga in Cucuta.

Colombia first played in the World Group play-offs in 2010 but the nation has not managed a return to that level of the competition since then.

Uruguay had defeated Colmbia in six of the previous 12 meetings between the two nations but Giraldo set the hosts off on the right foot, overcoming a second set blip against world No. 522 Marcel Felder to record an otherwise comfortable 62 36 61 62 victory.

Falla, the top ranked Colombian at No. 65 in the world, made light work of Ariel Behar in the second rubber, dropping just four games against the 23-year-old in a 62 60 62 triumph.

A place in September’s play-offs beckons, and Juan-Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah will be keen to finish the job against Felder and Behar in Saturday’s doubles rubber.

Chile and Eduacor are battling to join them in September’s play-offs, and it was the latter who made early headway on day one as Julio-Cesar Campozano battled through an epic opening encounter to defeat Christian Garin 46 62 46 62 97 and put the hosts 1-0 up in Manta. Paul Capdeville hit back later in the day, however, to leave the tie level after day one.
