World No. 2 Roger Federer has announced he will play for Switzerland in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Europe/Africa Zone Group I second round on 8-10 July.

Having gained a bye in the first round, Switzerland takes on Portugal at home with the winner going through to the World Group play-offs.

Writing on his website, Federer said:

Dear Fans

I've decided I'm going to play the Davis Cup tie in July at home against Portugal. I'm really looking forward to helping Switzerland begin the process of getting back into the World Group.

Switzerland was relegated from the World Group in 2010 after defeats to Spain and Kazakhstan. Federer, who wasn’t available for either of those losses, played his last tie against Italy in 2009 when he helped the Swiss to a 3-2 victory.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion made his Davis Cup debut back in 1999 and has since compiled a 37-11 win-loss record over 18 ties. Switzerland's best performance during this time was a semifinal finish in 2003, narrowly losing 3-2 to Australia in Melbourne.

The deadline for official team nominations is on 28 June, while venue details are due to be announced on 16 March.
