Argentina’s new Davis Cup captain Martin Jaite has announced his team line-up for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round tie against Germany on 10-12 February.
Jaite, alongside vice captain Mariano Zabaleta, confirmed today that Juan Monaco, Juan Ignacio Chela, David Nalbandian and Eduardo Schwank will make up the four-man side to face Germany at the Stechert Arena in Bamberg, while Facundo Arguello will also be involved as a hitting partner.
The Argentine team are planning to travel to Bamberg on 3 February to begin their preparations, but Jaite is first flying to Melbourne to watch his players in action at the Australian Open, as well as scouting their German opposition at the same time.
“We are going there with a very experienced team, with players that have played in many big battles in Davis Cup. This gives me a lot of confidence in my first experience as Davis Cup captain,” said Jaite.
“We know that we are facing a very difficult tie against a very compact German team, but if I had to define the Argentine team in one word I would choose experience, and that gives me a great deal of reassurance.”
Argentina, last year’s Davis Cup runners-up, are without their top player Juan Martin del Potro, who declared himself unavailable for the tie because he didn’t want to switch to clay, the chosen surface of the Germans, during the hard court season.
Meanwhile, Jaite’s opposite number Patrik Kuhnen has selection concerns of his own after his top player Florian Mayer was forced to pull out of the recent Brisbane International with a hip injury. The good news for the German captain is that Mayer appears to have recovered in time to take his place in the Australian Open first round.
The deadline for all captains to submit their official team nominations is 31 January.
