Philippines set up an Asia/Oceania Group II third round tie with New Zealand on September 13-15 after winning both of its reverse singles rubbers to complete a 4-1 victory over Thailand.

Philippines now has the chance to return to Group I, having been relegated from the tier following defeat to Chinese Taipei in September 2011.

The home side looked destined to be heading for a fifth rubber in Lapu City despite taking a 2-1 advantage into the final day, with Philippines’ Ruben Gonzales tasked with facing Danai Udomchoke, ranked more than 550 spots above him, in the fourth rubber.

But the Terre Haute native achieved a surprisingly straightforward victory, requiring just three sets to get past Udomchoke on the clay courts at Plantation Bay Resort & Spa and sealing Philippines’ spot in the third round after a 64 63 62 triumph. Francis Casey Alcantara finished the job for the hosts, defeating Wishya Trongcharoenchaikul 64 46 60 in the dead fifth rubber.

New Zealand had progressed to the third round on Friday, after the nation was awarded the tie against Pakistan due to an unplayable court in Myanmar.

Kuwait lived to fight another day in Group II after surviving its relegation play-off against Syria.

Mohammad Ghareeb guided the home nation back from 1-0 down in Mishref, playing a starring role with two singles wins and a doubles victory alongside Hassan Al Mousa to keep Kuwait in Group II. Marc Abdelnour secured a consolation for Syria with victory over Naser Al Obaidly, but it was too little too late as the nation bounced immediately back into Group III.

Bassam Beidas kept Lebanon’s hopes of avoiding relegation alive after overcoming Sri Lanka’s Harshana Godamanna 64 67(5) 63 63 in the fourth rubber to level proceedings at 2-2. But despite his best efforts, Dineshkanthan Thangarajah defeated Karim Alayli to send the hosts down into Asia/Oceania Group III.
