Staff try to dry the court in Cairns

The first of the reverse singles at the Australia v Belgium play-off tie in Cairns has been postponed until Monday due to continual heavy rain.

Play was officially suspended at 7:20pm, after Peter Luczak and Olivier Rochus had been waiting to resume their reverse singles, currently standing at 4-4 15-15.

The players had already had to wait over five hours to begin their match on Sunday.

Hewitt injured

The tie had already suffered one setback when, in the morning, Lleyton Hewitt was replaced by Luczak.

The Aussie No. 1 had suffered a strain close to his right wrist during his doubles victory on Saturday and according to captain John Fitzgerald, has been advised by doctors to recuperate for three weeks.

On Monday, Luczak must resume the most important match of his Davis Cup career as he fights to defeat his higher-ranked opponent and save Australia from having to play a decisive fifth rubber.

Luczak and Rochus have met just once before, at the 2006 Australian Open, when Luczak prevailed in five sets.

Down to the wire

Should the tie go down to the wire, Carsten Ball will find himself playing Steve Darcis, who was unable to compete on Friday and Saturday due to a shoulder injury, or Ruben Bemelmans, who pushed Lleyton Hewitt to four sets on Friday.

Play resumes at the Cairns International Tennis Centre at 10am local time.
