STUTTGART, GERMANY: Gael Monfils felt nervous ahead of his World Group quarterfinal rubber against Philipp Kohlschreiber as playing for your country brings a different kind of pressure. He fought through three tight sets to win 76(3) 76(5) 64 and give France the perfect start to the weekend.

Earlier, Richard Gasquet made a triumphant return to Davis Cup action by pulling back from a two-set deficit to overcome German No. 1 Florian Mayer 46 46 75 63 63. Mayer served for victory in the third set but tension caused him to cramp, he lost his service game to love and let the Frenchman back into the match.
