Rankings Explained

The ITF Davis Cup Nations Ranking measures the success of all nations participating in the competition over a 'rolling' four year period with recent performance weighted more heavily.

After each round the ranking period adjusts and any results outside the adjusted four year period drop off. At the same time, points from the same round for the three previous years are reduced, as per the points table below. Therefore, 100 points would become 75, then 50, then 25 over the four years.

The points stated are awarded to the winning team in that round. A nation losing in the World Group first round, for example, earns 0 points for that tie. In addition, any nation that defeats a higher-ranked nation receives bonus points according to its opponent's ranking, as per the points table below.

Unique to tennis, there are additional bonus points for any nation that is able to win on an opponent's home ground in the World Group, Group I or Group II. If an away nation wins a tie, a 25% ‘away win bonus’ is added to the total points (win + ranking bonus) for that tie.

For example, if a nation received 110 round points and 10 bonus points for winning a tie, making a total of 120 points, if it had won away it would then receive 25% of this total (30 points) in addition, making a total of 150 points.
