The Australians have a home World Group play-off tie in which they will need to defeat Uzbekistan if they are to extend their stay in the World Group beyond one season. Australia has won both of the two meetings between the teams, including last year's Asia/Oceania Zone Group I second round tie.

Australia's mix of youth and experience were no match for a strong French team as they fell to a 5-0 loss, winning just one set in the tie. Thanasi Kokinakkis got his first taste of Davis Cup competition in the dead fourth rubber and another future hope, Nick Kyrgios, also got valuable experience as the team look to be building a formidable team in the years to come.
Australia is second only to the Americans on the all-time list of Davis Cup champions, having won the title 28 times. In 1939, when facing USA, it produced the only successful comeback from 2-0 down in a Final. Between 1905 and 1922, Aussie players represented Australasia, which was a combined Australia-New Zealand team.
