China P.R. faces Chinese Taipei in the first round of the Asia/Oceania Group I relegation play-off. The two nations meet for the third consecutive season in Davis Cup and fifth time overall. They met in exactly the same relegation stage last year and China came out on top in a thrilling 3-2 victory that ended in a fifth decisive rubber.

China lost to Uzbekistan inside two days in the opening round of this year’s Group I and so face a relegation play-off for the second consecutive year. Their first two matches against Uzbekistan went to five sets, with Di Wu leading world No. 46 Denis Istomin by two sets to love in the opening match, but their opponents sealed victory comfortably in the doubles.
History
China is yet to play in the World Group but has twice been within touching distance, reaching the World Group play-offs in 1990 and Eastern Zone Final in 1987.
