Last tie 4-6 April 2014
China, P.R. gave higher-ranked Uzbek opponents a real scare, but in the end narrowly missed reaching the World Group play-offs for the first time since 1990. Di Wu won both of his singles rubbers, leaving the tie evenly poised at 2-2 after earlier wins for Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin and Farrukh Dustov in the doubles and for Istomin in the opening singles rubber. Dustov overcame Ze Zhang in an epic five set match in the deciding rubber, sending the Uzbeks through by the narrowest of margins.
China is yet to play in the World Group but has twice been within touching distance, reaching the World Group play-offs in 1990 and Eastern Zone Final in 1987.
