Ecuador face a difficult trip to Switzerland for their World Group play-off. It will be the first meeting between the two nations. Ecuador have only won three of their 10 World Group play-off ties to date.
Last tie 5-7 April 2013
Ecuador defeated Chile 3-2 in Ecuador, sending the home nation through to the World Group play-offs. Ecuador needed to win both reverse singles rubbers to go through, and, when Paul Capdeville retired against Julio-Cesar Campozano, the tie went to the deciding fifth rubber. Emilio Gomez stepped up for Ecuador and beat 16-year-old Christian Garin in four sets.
Ecuador was a quarterfinalist in 1985 and - prior to the introduction of the World Group - it won the American Zone in 1967, but lost in the Inter Zonal semifinals. Nicolas Lapentti holds the record for the most number of five-set singles wins in the competition, with 13.
