Italy recorded a 5-0 victory over a depleted Swiss team in this year's opening round. In spite of the scoreline, Switzerland's Marco Chiudinelli and Henri Laaksonen ran the Italians close on day one, with Chiudinelli taking Paolo Lorenzi to five sets and Laaksonen taking Andreas Seppi to four, before the Italians sealed victory. The pair could not match Seppi and Simone Bolelli in doubles, however, the Italians recording a straight sets win to progress to the quarterfinals.
Italy was crowned Davis Cup champion in 1976, and has finished runner-up on six further occasions. Italy's Nicola Pietrangeli is the leading all-time Davis Cup player. He holds the record for playing the most rubbers (164), as well as the records for the most wins in both singles (78-32) and doubles (42-12). He also forms half of the most successful doubles partnership with Orlando Sirola (34-8).
