Next tie 16-18 September 2016
Japan will compete in a World Group play-off in September.
Last tie 4-6 March 2016
Japan lost a tight tie away to defending champions Great Brtain in March, meaning it must now compete in a World Group play-off in September. After straight sets wins for Andy Murray and Kei Nishikori left the tie level, the Murray brothers won the doubles to give the Brits the edge. They looked to be on the way to heading straight through to the quarterfinals when Murray went two sets up on Nishikori, but the Japanese No. 1 fought back to even things up, before Murray raised his level in the decider to seal the tie.
Japan finished runner-up in 1921, which was its best Davis Cup performance to date. Japan was an inaugural member of the World Group in 1981. In 2011 they returned to the top tier of the competition after 26 years in the Asia/Oceania Group I before scoring their first victory at the highest level in 2014.
