Featuring in the quarterfinals for the second time, Kazakhstan was denied the chance to reach its first World Group semifinal after falling to defending champions Czech Republic 3-1 in Astana. Jan Hajek and Lukas Rosol put the visitors 2-0 up with fairly routine singles wins and, while Andrey Golubev and Yuriy Schukin combined to defeat Hajek and Radek Stepanek in the doubles, Rosol polished off victory for the defending champions when a supreme serving performance saw him edge past Evgeny Korolev in four tight sets.
