Juan Pablo Varillas Patino-Samudio battled back from 0-2 down in the deciding fifth rubber to give Peru a 3-2 win over Uruguay. Peru won both rubbers on the opening day to take a 2-0 lead, but Uruguay fought back to win the doubles rubber and then levelled the tie when Martin Cuevas won the fourth rubber. Rodrigo Arus looked like he had sealed a Uruguayan victory but it was Varillas Patino-Samudio and Peru who advanced to the second round.
Peru's best Davis Cup performance came in 2008, when it reached the World Group first round.
