Russia were defeated by Poland 3-2 as Jerzy Janowicz did the damage by beating Karen Khachanov on the opening day and Dmitry Tursunov on Sunday. Marcin Matkowski and Mariusz Fyrstenberg scored Poland's other point after Tursunov had initially leveled the tie at 1-1.
Russia has won the title twice - in 2002 and 2006 - and finished runner-up on three further occasions. Until 1991, Russian players competed under the flag of USSR, and then CIS in 1992.
The doubles rubber in the World Group semifinal between Russia and Argentina in 2002, featuring Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin against Lucas Arnold-Ker and David Nalbandian, is the longest recorded men's doubles match of all time, at 6 hours, 20 minutes. Meanwhile, Andrei Chesnokov was involved in the joint-longest set of a Davis Cup singles rubber - 46 games - in the European Zone semifinal between Russia and Netherlands in 1987.
