Russia will welcome Italy for a World Group play-off, for their sixth meeting and first since 1996.
Last tie 17-19 July 2015
After suffering two comprehensive, straight sets defeats in the Friday singles, not many were expecting Russia to turn the tie around against Spain. But that's exactly what they did, staging a remarkable comeback against the much fancied Spaniards. It all began with a superb doubles win in five sets for Evgeny Donskoy and Konstantin Kravchuk. Then Donskoy defeated much higher-ranked and experienced Tommy Robredo in four sets before 17-year-old Andrey Rublev completed the turnaround by beating Pablo Andujar to delight the shocked home crowd and condemn Spain to another year in Zone Group I.
Russia has won the title twice - in 2002 and 2006 - and finished runner-up on three further occasions. Until 1991, Russian players competed under the flag of USSR, and then CIS in 1992.
