Switzerland will host Italy in this year's semifinal in its bid to reach a first Davis Cup by BNP Paribas final since 1992. The Italians lead the head-to-head record 3-2, but Switzerland have emerged victorious from each of the previous two ties, in 1999 and 2009.
Last tie 4-6 April 2014
The Swiss dream team of Stanislas Wawrinka and Roger Federer came perilously close to being upset by a plucky Kazakhstan contingent. Surprise wins for Andrey Golubev over Wawrinka, and for Golubev and and Aleksandr Nedovyesov in the doubles (separated by a victory for Federer against Mikhail Kukushkin), left the Swiss needing to win both rubbers on the final day to progress. Fortunately for them, Wawrinka and Federer delivered, defeated Kukushkin and Golubev respectively to send the Swiss through to a first semifinal since 2003.
Switzerland's best performance came in 1992, when it finished runner-up. Led by Marc Rosset and Jakob Hlasek, the Swiss lost 3-1 to a strong American team - made up of Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Jim Courier and John McEnroe - in the Final.
