Next tie 12-14 September 2014
Slovak Republic must travel to USA in their World Group play-off, aiming to re-join the Davis Cup elite for the first time since 2006. The Slovaks have not beaten USA in two previous attempts, and will hope that the good form they have shown already this year continues in September.
Last tie 4-6 April 2014
Slovak Republic were forced to work hard in defeating Austria 4-1 in their Zone Group I second round tie. Davis Cup debutant Norbert Gombos got the tie off to an excellent start, beating Austrian No. 1 in four sets. Five set wins for Lukas Lacko and for Martin Klizan and Michal Mertinak in the doubles saw Slovak Republic through to the World Group play-offs; the teams split the dead rubbers on the Sunday.
Slovak Republic is a former Davis Cup runner-up, having lost to Croatia 3-2 in the Final in 2005. On that occasion, in Bratislava, the result was decided in the fifth rubber when Mario Ancic defeated Michal Mertinak in straight sets. Prior to 1994, Slovak players represented Czechoslovakia.
