Ukraine pulled off a 4-1 win in Lithuania even without their top-two players in Alexandr Dolgopolov and Sergiy Stakhovsky. Ricardas Berankis, the highest-ranked player in the tie, got the hosts off to a strong start with a straight-forward victory over Vladyslav Manafov. But Illya Marchenko responded for the visitors to make it 1-1. Marchenko and Denys Molchanov won the doubles rubber in four sets, after the opening two stanzas had been split both on tiebreaks. Then Marchenko upset higher-ranked Berankis in the fourth rubber in straight sets to clinch the victory for Ukraine and their place in Zone Group I for next year.
Ukraine's best Davis Cup performance came in 2009, when reaching the World Group play-offs. As an independent nation, Ukraine first played in the competition in 1993.
