As it happened: Andy Roddick v Dmitry Tursunov

Game-by-game updates:

Game, set, match USA

Roddick 6-2 Tursunov
Tursunov tries hard to hold on to this match for as long as possible but ace No. 25 from Roddick sets up match point He gets a standing ovation before the match is even over and the crowd are hard to settle but he does it!! Roddick raises his arms in the air and the fireworks come out. A-Rod thanks the crowd as USA rejoices a 1-0 lead in this final. Can James Blake extend it to two?

Roddick 5-2 Tursunov
Tursunov finally gets a game and we see a little bit of animation now, maybe it's because the nerves have gone. He whips Roddick with a beautiful crosscourt winner, magic tennis that has rarely been seen from the Russian in this match.

Roddick 5-1 Tursunov
Ace No. 24 for Roddick extends the lead. There seems to be no chance of a comeback for Tursunov now unless a miracle happens.

Roddick 4-1 Tursunov
Third double fault from Tursunov gives Roddick 30-0 advantage which he takes to 40-15 and it's a double break for USA when Tursunov nets a backhand. There are no signs of that memorable thriller between these two in last year's semifinal, Tursunov seems disconnected.

Mardy Fish, John Isner and Donald Young come on court in the break to the delight of the crowd.

Roddick 3-1 Tursunov
Tursunov is looking a little lazy, his confidence in the game seems to be slightly waning while all eyes are on Roddick's power trip the other side of the net. Serve is down to 53% for Roddick in this game though, but he does manage to hold thanks to a long forehand from Dmitry.

Roddick 2-1 Tursunov

"Tursunov is showing no emotion whatsoever, he is so nonchalant when he hits a winning shot"
Eli Weinstein on Davis Cup Radio

Roddick 2-0 Tursunov
Roddick is right on the game with his serving weapon, a 22nd ace satisfies the break as he goes 2-0 ahead in this third set.

Roddick 1-0 Tursunov
Tursunov's faced with two break points and is looking frustrated as he bangs his head with his racket after a first serve fault. Roddick then takes the break in this opening game of the third set and is looking seriously pumped up.

"Tursunov is being out-psyched in this match even though it's quite close."
Chris Bowers, Davis Cup Radio

SECOND SET USA 64 64

Roddick 6-4 Tursunov
Three aces for Roddick, including a 142mph on his 17th of the match, he is in formidable form and USA take the second set.

Roddick 5-4 Tursunov
The American seems content to let Tursunov serve out this game and save his energies for his next service game.

Roddick 5-3 Tursunov
Tursunov changed his shirt at the changeover and is resplendent in all-red now. Roddick serves three double faults but saves a break point and two aces later, he is within touching distance of a two-set lead.

Roddick 4-3 Tursunov
Tursunov holds to love to maintain the pressure on the American.

Roddick 4-2 Tursunov
A couple of wayward returns on the Russian side of the net, yet another love game from Roddick finished with a smash.

Swift and strong service game from Tursunov as he closes the gap.

Roddick 3-1 Tursunov
Roddick isn't fooled by a drop volley from Tursunov and holds serve.

Roddick 2-1 Tursunov
There seems to be a bit of a pattern in this match as Tursunov yet again saves three break points. He seems completely oblivious to the American fans. But Roddick remains strong and pulls out a smart crosscourt winner which sets up break point and he completes. High fives from US captain Patrick McEnroe and smiles all round in the American camp, which includes Mardy Fish, Donald Young.

Roddick 1-1 Tursunov
12th ace from A-Rod, another love game.

Roddick 0-1 Tursunov
Two double faults from Tursunov opens up the second set but he remains calm and we see the real tactical side of the Russian as he controls the pace over Roddick, slowing the American down to set up some cheeky winners and seal what could have been a disastrous game for the Russian.

FIRST SET USA 6-4

Roddick 6-4 Tursunov
Two thrilling rallies from these big guys, and as Roddick seals set point and sends the fans wild, Tursunov decides to challenge - he's correct! Unbelievable! This unsettles Roddick as he can't seem to close out quickly as Tursunov puts up some resistance but finally an ace and a huge serve from A-Rod finishes off the set and he breathes a sigh of relief. So do the fans. That was tense, this is going to be a great match.

Roddick 5-4 Tursunov
Tursunov saves a set point to Roddick and shows he means business by punishing a forehand from Roddick with a backhand volley which was so fast it was barely visible.

Roddick 5-3 Tursunov
A-Rod seals a very quick game with a second-serve ace.

Roddick 4-3 Tursunov
A love game from Tursunov. He seems unperturbed by the break.

Roddick 4-2 Tursunov
The first challenge of the Davis Cup Final from Tursunov, on Roddick's ace and the Russian is correct as Hawk-Eye shows the ball as out. Even so, Roddick holds serve and consolidates the break.

Roddick 3-2 Tursunov
USA gets the first break! Tursunov had crawled back from 15-40 down to deuce but sends a fierce forehand edging outside the line. The crowd are up on their feet, as is the USA bench, and the atmosphere has suddenly got rather tingling - unsurprisingly.

Roddick 2-2 Tursunov
A crazy three aces from Roddick in this game to set up 40-15 and the Russian sends a backhand long to let the American hold serve.

"Fire up the heat Andy! Wish I could be there to cheer them all on, so lots of luck to the USA guys from Virginia"
Katherine, Charlottesville

Roddick 1-2 Tursunov
Roddick eyes a break by sailing to 40-0, but Tursunov saves three break points to come back and hold serve, producing a second ace en route.

Roddick 1-1 Tursunov
Roddick comes back with some huge serving to level.

Roddick 0-1 Tursunov
Tursunov opens up with an ace and finishes off a love game with a cheeky drop shot which Roddick nets.

13:02
The ceremony is over and now Billie Jean King is at the net to do the coin toss with chair umpire Carlos Ramos. Roddick is already out of his tracksuit, eager to go.

12:48
The opening ceremony has begun, Russian captain Shamil Tarpischev leads his team on court first, followed by Dmitry Tursunov. That's the Russians done and now the PA is totally drowned out as the Americans are announced on court. The spotlight is on the US flag and the fireworks begin as Patrick McEnroe steps onto court.

12:38
So here we are. The stadium is deafening, even though we still have a few of the 12,000 seats to fill up yet as the fans drift in. We've seen stunts and gymnastics on court, some footage of the USA's 1995 victory, and various other crowd-inciting entertainment.
