| Portland, Oregon, to host 2007 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final |
The USTA has announced that the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon will host the 2007 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final between USA and Russia on 30 November - 2 December.
This is the first time that Portland has hosted a Davis Cup Final, although it did host two Davis Cup semifinals in 1981 and 1984 when USA defeated Australia on both occasions. The USTA are anticipating a sell-out crowd in the 12,000-seat arena, in the USA's first final for 15 years. Back then in 1992, Andre Agassi, Jim Courier, Pete Sampras and John McEnroe led USA to a 3-1 victory over Switzerland in Fort Worth, Texas - one of their 31 titles in the competition.
"The stage is set for a memorable event," said Arlen Kantarian, Chief Executive of the USTA. "We are expecting a pumped-up and patriotic crowd in Portland, one of the most passionate sports cities in the country."
US Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe is hoping his team can bring the Cup back to the USA and win their first title since 1995. "We expect a spirited battle as the Russians will look to repeat as Davis Cup champions, but our players have been committed to Davis Cup for many years and have a strong drive."
Defending champion Russia defeated Germany 3-2 in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas semifinals to reach the final for the second year running. November's final will mark a fourth meeting with USA - the Russians sole victory over the US team came in last year's semifinals when Dmitry Tursunov scored an epic 63 64 57 36 17-15 victory over Andy Roddick in the fourth rubber, equalling the longest final set in World Group history. The opposing teams also met in the 1995 final at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow, which was the last time USA were Davis Cup champions.
