| Spanish take to the bullring again |
The Plaza de Toros in Puerto Banus, Marbella, has been chosen to host the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas quarterfinal between Spain and Germany on July 10-12.
Marbella was selected ahead of two other candidates – Zaragoza and Puerto de Santa Maria, near Cadiz – at a meeting of the Spanish Tennis Federation’s Board of Directors on Saturday.
A clay court will be laid in the bull ring, which has a minimum capacity of 12,000, although this could be increased with temporary structures.
This will be the second time that Marbella has staged a Davis Cup tie. In 1989, Spain defeated Mexico 3-2 in a World Group first round tie in the city.
The two nations also meet in last year’s quarterfinal, which Spain won 4-1. Spain has won three of the last four meetings between the two nations, although Germany leads their overall head-to-head series 9-5.
