Spain takes over No. 1 position on Davis Cup Nations Ranking
Spain has ended Russia’s two-and-and-half-year reign at the top of the ITF Davis Cup Nations Ranking. The 2008 champion has taken over the No. 1 ranking following last weekend’s Davis Cup by BNP Paribas quarterfinals, in which it defeated Germany 3-2 in Marbella. Russia meanwhile suffered a 4-1 quarterfinal loss to Israel in Tel Aviv.

Russia had held the No. 1 ranking since December 2006, when it defeated Argentina to capture its second Davis Cup title. Spain was last ranked No. 1 in September 2005.

Russia drops to No. 3 on the new rankings, with USA climbing one place to No. 2 despite its 3-2 quarterfinal defeat by Croatia. Surprise semifinalist Israel climbs from No. 8 to a career-high No. 6.
