| Wilander & Nystrom step down |
Mats Wilander and Joakim Nystrom have announced their retirement as captain and coach of Sweden’s Davis Cup team.
Wilander and Nystrom led Sweden to the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas semifinals in 2007 and quarterfinals in 2003, 2004 and 2008.
The pair also guided Sweden to play-off victories in 2005, 2006 and 2009, preserving the team’s place in the elite World Group.
During their seven years in charge, Sweden compiled a win-loss ratio of 8-7. This included impressive 4-1 victories over Australia and Argentina as well as hard fought away wins against India and Brazil in the play-offs.
“We are grateful for what they have accomplished and we respect their decision,” said Henrik Kallen, General Secretary at the Swedish Tennis Association.
“I also hope that in the future there will be the possibility to use Mats [Wilander] and Jocke’s [Nystrom] tennis knowledge in Swedish Tennis.”
As players, Wilander and Nystrom both represented Sweden in its title winning campaigns of 1985 and 1987. Wilander also played in the Swedish team that was crowned champion in 1984.
In 2010, Sweden will host Argentina in the first round on 5-7 March.
