| Enqvist appointed as Swedish captain |
The Swedish Tennis Association has appointed Thomas Enqvist as the new captain of Sweden’s Davis Cup team.
Enqvist succeeds Mats Wilander who, along with his assistant Joakim Nystrom, stood down from running the team earlier this week. The pair had been in charge for seven years.
“This is of course a big honour and I think I have learned a lot from all my former coaches, including the last Davis Cup coaches Mats Wilander and Calle Hageskog,” said Enqvist, the former world No. 4.
After moving back to Sweden he has been involved in the Swedish Tennis Association’s junior program during the last year. “In my job, my goal is also to take part and have a link down to the best juniors in the country,” added Enqvist.
As a player, Enqvist won 19 singles titles, including three at Masters Series events, and finished runner-up at the Australian Open in 1999. He also represented Sweden between 1995 and 2004 and enjoyed an illustrious Davis Cup career, compiling a win-loss record of 15-11.
In 1996, Enqvist played in the World Group Final against France, winning both of his singles rubbers. Then, in 1997 and 1998, he was a member of the Swedish team in the early rounds that went on to win the title twice, the last nation to achieve back-to-back victories.
“My first Davis Cup memory was waking up in the middle of the night in 1983 watching my former coach Jocke Nystrom playing against Australia on grass during Christmas time,” reflected Enqvist.
Enqvist joined by Larsson - updated on 11/11/2009 Enqvist's first major decision in his new role was to appoint Magnus Larsson as his assistant.
"Magnus is perfect for the job. He has the ability to see ideas or tactics from a new perspective and give a different view on things," said Enqvist.
"With Magnus in the team the group gets wider and even smarter. He is a great guy and creates a great deal of joy around him."
Larsson played in 12 ties for Sweden between 1992 and 2003, compiling a win-loss record of 13-6. He was also a member of the title-winning teams in 1994 and 1997 - on both occasions he won two singles rubbers.
"I have some of my best tennis memories from representing Sweden in Davis Cup and the luck to play under great leaders such as Jonte Sjogren, Calle Hageskog, Anders Jarryd, Mats Wilander and Jocke Nystrom," said Larsson.
"It was easy to say yes. I have a lot of respect of Thomas as a person and as a natural leader. It will be interesting to see what we can achieve together, we have a thin but interesting team who can beat every nation in the world."
Sweden’s next tie will be at home against Argentina in the 2010 World Group first round, taking place on 5-7 March.
