| DavisCup.com poll makes Spain favourite |
According to the latest poll on DavisCup.com, Spain is the favourite to win the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final against Czech Republic, being staged in Barcelona on 7-8 November.
Albert Costa’s team received 72 per cent of the vote, with over 5,000 people casting their opinion.
Spain - after defeating Argentina in last year’s Final - is fast establishing itself as the dominant force in Davis Cup by BNP Paribas.
When Czech Republic travels to Palau Sant Jordi next month, Spain will be attempting to become the first nation since Sweden in 1998 to retain the title, an impressive feat in today’s World Group format.
In fact, Spain has not been defeated in 17 home ties and is also unbeaten in 19 ties on clay – impressive stuff. This record dates back to a narrow 2-3 loss against Brazil, played Lerida in 1999.
Czech Republic, meanwhile, has a team spirit that will match anything Spain can throw at them. Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych have led their nation to its first Final since 1980, the year that Ivan Lendl inspired his side - then named Czechoslovakia - to its only victory.
