| Safin retires from professional tennis |
Russian Marat Safin has called time on his career following defeat at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris, a tournament he has won on three occasions.
Safin, 29, is a former world No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion. He defeated Pete Sampras to win the US Open in 2000 and Lleyton Hewitt to win the Australian Open in 2005.
Since turning professional in 1997, Safin has won over 400 tour-level singles matches and notched 15 titles. He has also recorded a pair of tournament victories on the doubles court.
Safin enjoyed an illustrious Davis Cup by BNP Paribas career, which spanned over 10 years after making his debut in 1998. He has played in 23 ties and compiled a win-loss record of 31-21.
In his first tie, an away fixture against USA, he found himself up against Andre Agassi and Jim Courier in the singles rubbers. Debuts don’t get much tougher than that!
Russia has won the Davis Cup title twice with Safin leading the team on both occasions. The Russians defeated France in Paris in 2002 and Argentina in Moscow in 2006.
If you ask a tennis fan to describe Safin in one word, you will more often than not get the response ‘talented’. He possesses every shot in the book and has always been capable of produce outstanding performances.
