| Lopez looks forward to Final |
Feliciano Lopez has established himself as Spain’s doubles specialist having played in his nation’s last nine Davis Cup by BNP Paribas ties. Without doubt, it is a good niche to have carved out considering the strength in depth of the Spanish squad.
All of Spain’s players, with the exception of Rafael Nadal, know their place is up for grabs in each and every tie. There are currently 11 Spaniards ranked inside the world’s top 75 giving Albert Costa an embarrassment of riches to choose from – a ‘nice problem to have’ some might say.
“I have to play my best tennis [to be selected],” said Lopez. “It’s been like this for many years. I was lucky to be in the team for the last eight or nine ties so hopefully I can be in the Final and we can get the trophy again.”
If selected to face Czech Republic in Barcelona, Lopez will be making his third appearance in a Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final. He made his debut in the title decider against Australia in 2003 and also played in last year’s winning team, defeating Argentina in Mar del Plata.
“To be in the Final again is unbelievable for all of us,” said Lopez. “Davis Cup is a very special competition and we all are very, very proud of being in the Final again.”
On the subject of Spain’s opponent, Czech Republic, Lopez knows it’s not going to be easy. “I think they deserve to be in the Final,” said the 28-year-old. “They are in the Final because they are a very strong team.”
“Of course, we are favourite but anything can happen in Davis Cup. So, we have to be ready and we have to respect the opponent because I think it’s going to be tough.”
