| Spain maintains top spot |
Following Spain’s Davis Cup by BNP Paribas victory, Albert Costa’s team has maintained its position at the top of the ITF Davis Cup Nations Ranking.
Spain has been the competition’s dominant force over the last decade, winning four titles and also finishing runner-up on one other occasion.
At this year’s Final, staged at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, the Spanish team of Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez defeated Czech Republic 5-0.
Nadal began the weekend with a straight sets win over Tomas Berdych 75 60 62. This was followed by the pivotal moment of the tie as Ferrer fought back to overcome Radek Stepanek 26 16 64 64 86.
In Saturday’s doubles rubber, Verdasco and Lopez teamed up against Stepanek and Berdych. The home pair trailed 6-7 in the first set tie-break but turned it around to triumph 76(7) 75 62. On the final day, Nadal and Ferrer won the two ‘dead’ rubbers.
Czech Republic, meanwhile, has held onto fourth position in the rankings with USA and Russia lying second and third respectively. Lower down, Croatia’s drop from sixth to tenth has handed improved positions to Israel, Germany and Sweden.
The ITF Davis Cup Nations Ranking was launched at the end of 2001 and is the sole criteria for seeding at all levels of the competition. A new rankings list is published after each tie weekend, taking into account results from the previous four years.
