Djokovic confident ahead of USA clash
Novak Djokovic, the world No. 3 and top-ranked player in Serbia, is optimistic about facing USA in this year’s Davis Cup by BNP Paribas.

Djokovic made his Davis Cup debut in 2004 and has since inspired Serbia to reach the World Group for the first time – after defeating Australia 4-1 in the play-offs in 2007.

“Davis Cup is first of all a very special competition for all of us,” said Djokovic. “We take part in an individual sport and Davis Cup is the only competition where we can feel the team spirit.”

In Serbia’s two previous World Group appearances, it has been drawn away against the reigning champion - Russia in 2008 and Spain in 2009 - with both ties ending in defeat.

“The last two years we’ve had a very bad draw,” said Djokovic. “But this year we are playing at home and, even though we are playing the most successful nation in Davis Cup competition, we are confident we can make a good result.”

Serbia has won its last three home ties for the loss of just one rubber and Djokovic, who has compiled a win-loss record of 14-6 in Davis Cup play, knows the importance of not having to travel.

“Home advantage is a big thing in Davis Cup because then you can choose venue, you can choose surface, you can choose balls – everything that you like,” said the 22-year-old.

“The support of the crowd is very important as well. We’re going to have 20,000 people every match. The crowd loves tennis and certainly it’s going to be very interesting for them to see big stars.”

The Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round tie between Serbia and USA will take place on an indoor clay court at Belgrade’s Beogradska Arena from 5-7 March.
