| McEnroe announces American team |
Patrick McEnroe, USA's Davis Cup captain, has announced his team for the upcoming trip to Belgrade, with John Isner and Sam Querrey joining doubles specialists Bob and Mike Bryan in the line-up.
USA will meet Serbia in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round, being held on an indoor clay court at Belgrade Arena from 5-7 March.
“We are very excited about John and Sam joining the Bryans to lead our Davis Cup team,” said McEnroe, who has guided the Americans to a 16-8 winning record since taking the position in 2001.
“Both guys have really stepped up their games and are more than ready to take on the challenge of going on the road to face Serbia. We have had great commitment from our players in the past and expect the same from John and Sam in the years ahead.”
Isner, who stands at 6’ 9”, will be the tallest American Davis Cup player in history when he makes his debut. The world No. 25 won the first title of his career in January and was named the ATP World Tour’s most improved player last year.
Querrey’s only previous Davis Cup appearance came during the semifinals in 2008, when USA was defeated 4-1 by Spain in Madrid. The 22-year-old has two tournament wins to his name, both coming at outdoor hard court events on home soil.
Bob and Mike Bryan, who were an integral part of USA’s successful campaign in 2007, are experienced Davis Cup players having made their debuts together back in 2003. The twin brothers have won 116 career titles between them, including 16 Grand Slam victories.
The official player nominations for all first round ties are due on Tuesday 23 February. The latest news will be available on DavisCup.com.
