| 'No regrets' for Djokovic |
Novak Djokovic bowed out of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells this week, losing to Ivan Ljubicic 75 63 in the fourth round. The two players have now met seven times, but it was only the second victory for the Croat.
The result came ten days after Djokovic spearheaded Serbia to its first ever Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group victory. He won both his singles rubbers to help the home team triumph 3-2 over USA in Belgrade.
“I had a very tiring couple of weeks coming from Davis Cup, which was emotionally very exhausting for me,” said Djokovic, who has compiled a 16-6 win-loss record since making his debut for Serbia in 2004.
Djokovic sealed the vital point against the Americans, defeating John Isner in a thrilling five-setter. It was clearly a tiring encounter, but the world No. 2 was delighted with the outcome.
“There is no regrets,” he added. “I went through a lot of positive emotions there. It took a lot out of me, obviously, and wasn't that great for Indian Wells. But I was very satisfied, and I still am, for winning that tie. It's something else.”
Next up for Serbia is a trip to Croatia in the quarterfinals, the first meeting between the two nations. Despite being retired from Davis Cup play, Ljubicic, who was a key member of the Croatian team that lifted the trophy in 2005, expects it to be an exciting event.
“I just think it's going to be great atmosphere and great tie, because both teams are having fantastic players,” said the former world No. 3. “It's something to play for. I mean, semifinals of the Davis Cup, it's a big game for both nations.”
The tie will be held along with the other three quarterfinals - France v Spain, Russia v Argentina, and Chile v Czech Republic - from 9-11 July.
