India defeated South Africa 4-1 in Johannesburg to advance to the World Group for the first time since 1998.

India last played in the World Group in 1998. Only Romania, Argentina and India have contested more than one final without winning the Davis Cup title.

In defeating Australia in the 1974 Eastern Zone Final, the two nations established a record for the most number of games in a tie (327).
