Spain currently holds a 3-2 lead over the Czechs in their head-to-head series. Its most recent victory came in the first round in 2004. Played on an indoor carpet court in Brno, Rafael Nadal and Tommy Robredo led the Spaniards to a narrow win.
Spain went on to clinch its second title in 2004 and has since added a third, beating Argentina in last year's Final. Led by Albert Costa, the Spanish team, who will be appearing in its seventh Final, is attempting to become the first nation since Sweden in 1998 to retain the Davis Cup. Its current unbeaten home record stretches to 17 ties while its record on clay is even more impressive having not been defeated in 19 ties.
The Czechs will be playing in the Final for the first time since Ivan Lendl inspired his nation to win its sole Davis Cup title in 1980. Since then, Czech Republic has been an almost permanent fixture in the World Group with Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek leading the team in recent years. |
